Adopting an Animal
You can contact us to adopt an animal in several ways.

We will require your name and contact details and also the name or type of animal you are looking to adopt. We also need a brief description of your home, for example, 'Do you have other animals; do you have children; is there access to a garden; do you work in the day?'

After this initial introduction, one of our representatives will arrange a homevisit. A homevisit is required to ensure that we are happy the animal is going to the right home, to assess the right kind of animal for that home, and also to make sure that the new owner has considered everything that the animal requires – from neutering and vaccination to basic daily care and suitable living space. During the visit, the home visitor may go into more detail about the animal’s requirements, and whether the new owner is happy with the recommendations ARC makes for that animal. It is very rare for a new owner to be refused following a home visit, and it offers a good opportunity to ask any questions that you might have.

If you live out of our immediate area and we are unable to visit your home, then we will either require a veterinary reference. or, iIf this is not possible, then a detailed discussion over the telephone, plus photographs and a description of your home, garden or hutch/run would be needed before adoption can proceed. If you do live further afield, you will also need to arrange transport to collect your new animal/s.

We don't wish to make it a difficult process for anybody. We just want to find the ideal home for our animals and the ideal companion for you.

After your assessment has been completed and confirmed, then we will arrange for you to visit the animal/s in their foster home. If you decide that you would like to go ahead with the adoption then you will be asked to complete and sign an adoption form. We also ask for a minimum donation to go towards the cost of veterinary fees and rehoming costs. Please note, as a charity organisation with limited funding and an all-volunteer staff, ARC does not profit in any way from its adoption donations.

As of March 2008, our minimum donation amunts are:

Cats – £90 single kitten, £150 for a pair of kittens; £60 neutered adult cat ; £80 neutered pedigree; £80 neutered & fully vaccinated or with first vaccinations.
All our cats over 6 months are neutered, flea-treated, wormed and microchipped prior to rehoming.

Rabbits – £35 babies; £40 neutered adult; £45 neutered with Myxi; £50 neutered with Myxi & VHD

Young animals
If you take on a kitten or baby rabbit that is unneutered because it is too young, you must agree to have the animal neutered as soon as it is old enough. Where the animal is old enough, we will of course neuter or spay the animal prior to rehoming. We also aim to vet check all animals prior to rehoming.

Rabbits
Rabbits are social animals and like to live in pairs or sibling groups. This is why we prefer to home our rabbits in pairs and do not recommend that any rabbit be housed alone, except in very special circumstances. We are happy to bond one of our rabbits to your existing rabbit, or we can bond two of our rabbits to make a pair. We also have many pairs up for rehoming.
