This Summer we took in a group of a group of 10 rabbits. Donna received a call from their owner, who had suffered a back injury and was unable to care for her 'beloved' pets anymore. What first appeared to be a sad tale for the rabbits, actually turned out to be an extremely fortunate twist of fate as they were very lucky to escape their present existence alive. The hutches they lived in were the smallest we had ever seen. They were not even high enough for the rabbits to sit upright. They each lived alone and none of them were neutered. Most of them had some medical problem or another, particularly with their teeth (due to a very poor diet). Despite their neglect and poor existence, they were all placid, gentle bunnies. After neutering and intense veterinary care, including 2 major operations to remove growths and the removal of 'Sweetpea's' front teeth, we set about re-homing the group. All are now living in spacious, caring homes with rabbit companions. The neglectful, solitary, cramped lives that they used to lead are just dark, distant memories. |
