TALE OF THE GENTLE GIANTPaddy was an unusual case by way of being the biggest dog I have ever met, 15st! When I received a call about taking in a dog and I asked, “what type of dog is it?”, I did not expect the answer, “an Irish Wolfhound”! His owner was going into hospital and her health prevented her from being able to care for Paddy properly. She loved him but she knew his current lifestyle was not good for him. I found Paddy in a small house, basically in one area, where he just lay because he was so overweight and depressed. He was loved but never went for walks and his diet was based on human leftovers. He was in danger of having a very short life. He was neutered and I fostered him for 2 weeks. It was quite an experience and taking him for a walk was like walking a pony. I think my feet did actually leave the ground at one point when he decided to run! We found a home for him in Scotland, where he has 60 acres to run a round in and a large, old farmhouse to roam. I think we added many more years to his life, happy ones too. I certainly will cherish the memories of looking after such a magnificent animal! |
